2017-05-24: by Martin A Smith, Garvan Inst. of Medical Research. The seminar will take place May 24th, 15.00-16.00 at University of Copenhagen, SUND/SCIENCE, Grønnegårdsvej 7, 1st floor library, Frederiksberg C.

Abstract:

Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) have developed a sequencing platform that eludes the prevalent sequence by synthesis paradigm in genomics. ONT sequencing is predicated on measuring characteristic disruptions in ionic current as a bio-polymer transits through a membrane-bound protein nanopore. Stigmatised by high error rates in its early developmental releases, the latest versions of the pocket sized MinION sequencer outshine the competition in most aspects.
I will present an in-depth review of the technology, exposing its strengths, limitations, distinctive applications, and future potential. I will also discuss the bioinformatics challenges and opportunities pertaining to the unique data produced by this disruptive technology, as well as how we are incorporating it into a clinical research setting.
