ABSTRACT:
tRNA nucleotidyltransferases catalyse addition and maintenance of the nucleotide triplet C-C-A at the 3'-end of tRNAs. As this sequence represents the position for aminoacylation, it is highly conserved in all kingdoms of life. Instead of an external nucleic acid as a template for sequence-specific nucleotide addition, these enzymes use a set of amino acid residues to select the proper nucleotide for incorporation. In my presentation, I will discuss evolution, functionality and substrate specificity of these unusual RNA polymerases.
